That One Day a Year When House Surfing Comes To Life

A lot of us use home and design websites to source ideas, products, resources, and knowledge online. We navigate sometime intuitively and sometimes aimlessly trying to gather our own personal ultimate "home environment" wish list as we dream of creating and perhaps eventually executing on those ideas. We see but we don’t get to touch.

The tech trend in flat web design means that we spend hours on surfing minimalist interfaces with attractive content that must ensure us repeatable and elevated experiences. Some of us are purists in our modernist spirit and draw from a carefully curated host of “go to” sites, stores, and events that bring together top talents who specialize in mid-century modern.

That’s where the annual Modern Home Tour Austin thrives - an entire day dedicated to your own self-paced tour of carefully selected Austin homes that ooze the epitome of modern architecture and design in all shapes and sizes. Each home is designed by prominent Austin architects and builders who enthusiastically speak with and answer questions from Tour goers. Designers and Trades also participate. The vibe of the day is really akin to how kids feel in a candy store!

The purpose of the Modern Home Tour Austin is to highlight and promote the collaborative exchange between real estate professionals, architects, designers, the trades and modern enthusiasts and to promote the modern movement. The self-guided Tour let’s us understand firsthand how we live in our modern spaces and experience design IRL (in real life).

Behind the scenes (and who doesn’t love BTS?), we sat down with Krisstina Wise, Founder of the Modern Home Tour Austin, prior to her own home’s 8 month gut renovation was completed. She discusses considerations for building a healthy modern house, what her newly coined phrase “modern organic” means and offers some advice about communications throughout renovations.

We were also thrilled as architects and designers offered us insights about their 2016 Modern Home Tour houses which were hand-picked from a host of entrants. Some were for sale and most are privately owned. We are always honored that Austinites open their doors to our #MHTATX each year for thousands to truly experience modern living at it’s finest.

You can enjoy those architect and designer interviews at your leisure.
