Michael Thurman of Michael Thurman Custom Homes loves building in Austin's east end. He builds and sells compact homes that are energy efficient and innovative through the use of technology. To consciously keep prices affordable for many Austin buyers, the layouts are generally smaller than 2000 sqft.
Open kitchens with great appliances and clean lines are one of the things that Michael constantly likes to play with. His “signature" includes a single pop of color (like a red backsplash for instance) versus the trend of a neutral palette throughout - he believes that each home should have a little personality of its own.
On innovation, Michael notes that builders must consider the expansive soil conditions found in East Austin infill lots. In our interview, Michael digs into building with "zero ventilation crawl spaces" that do not have traditional venting systems under the house. This allows for drainage and insulation to be used in a more technologically advanced way. It’s just one of many building techniques his team employs.
Tune in as Michael shares insights on “what’s hot and what’s not” and some of the latest trends in Austin homes.
